Drills for Volleyball Conditioning

by Hayley on May 30, 2011

Volleyball Conditioning Drills

When drilling for volleyball, there are three main classes of drills to use: conditioning, technical, and tactical drills. All classes of drills play an important part in the overall success of your team. But volleyball conditioning drills are often the most overlooked and under worked set of drills in practice. These drills should be used all year round, especially in the off-season. Volleyball conditioning drills are used to keep the body conditioned for volleyball, so it is important to tailor them to what the body of a player will need. The three main purposes of these drills is to train strength, agility, and stamina.

[Volleyball Drill] On Your Toes

by Hayley on May 30, 2011

One of the toughest things to get younger players and even
older players to remember is to stay on their toes.

There are several reasons for this: ease in movement side
to side, spring and give in your passes, and keeping you
alert to name a few.

While this is one of the most essential components of
passing, players will want to be flat footed.

Recently I was trying to think of how to help reinforce this
principle and I came up with this simple technique.

Get some 2×4 lumber and cut them at shoulder width
length.  This will help reinforce keeping a good base as
well.  Give a 2×4 to each player and have them stand in a
line with their 2×4 behind

Another great volleyball drill…

by Hayley on May 29, 2011

Here’s that great drill we talked about last time
to help you with Intensity Coaching.

Remember – intensity coaching is designed to help you and
your team to have less nerves on the big game days.

In a game if a player isn’t performing to the level needed to
win games, they may be substituted by someone who can
get the job done. The same idea rings true in this drill
call Cutthroat, but with one catch. The player who is making
mistakes is replaced by one of their teammates who makes
the call for substitution.

For instance: Stephanie falls into the net while blocking.
One of her teammates on the sideline will yell ‘Net foul,

Keeping Your Head in the Game

by Hayley on May 24, 2011

One of the most difficult things to overcome is the
mental component of the game.

I have a great athlete and pretty good volleyball
player on my team.  However, if she makes a
mistake or the gym is a bit different or there is an
obstacle over the court she is no good on the floor.

She has the skill, footwork and effort needed but
her head keeps her from having success on the
floor.  Even in practice I can see when she has
mentally “checked-out”.

So, how do you help your players stay mentally
tough?

Have them have to overcome things in practice.

Throw balls at them while they are serving.  Startle
them with a loud noise just when they

Setting Volleyball Drills

Setting Volleyball Drills

A good coach knows that in all likelihood, every player on his team is going to have to have the ability to set the ball.  Running good volleyball drills for setting will benefit the entire team, not just the normal setters.  Because setting the ball is often the best way to recover a broken play, it is important to have the entire team work on their setting skills.  These are some volleyball drills that will help everyone hone their skills to be beneficial to the entire team.
