[Volleyball Magic] Failing Forward

by Hayley on September 30, 2011

I remember well last year the NCAA football bowl series.  A particular program
had violated NCAA rules and the consequence was that some of their star players were suspended.

However, those players’ suspensions wouldn’t be served until the following this year because the powers that be wanted to have a good bowl game.

So often we want to spare people from consequence.  Consequently, people don’t learn from their mistakes.

This can be true for coaches as well.

As coaches we cannot fall into this trap.

We must remember that often we learn more from our mistakes than we do our successes.

Someone once described the path of wisdom this way, “Wisdom is the path paved

[Volleyball Magic] Freedom of Choice

by Hayley on September 28, 2011

Most of life is about control.  We all want it and most of us loose control when we don’t have it.

Yes, it’s true of even me.  Most conflicts or arguments arise out of who has the power to control.  Most of us mistakenly believe we can control others.

The only person you can control is yourself.

However, by releasing choices to others you can accomplish amazing things.

Watch a magician sometime as they give their guinea pig the ability to choose a card, number or whatever.  There is the illusion that the guinea pig has the control.  They do not.  The magician is not in control of the person but is in control of themselves, the trick and the outcome.  It’s called magicians

[Volleyball Magic] Speak Affirmation – 2

by Hayley on September 27, 2011

The other day I put down some tape to mark off a section that I wanted some of my students to stay in.

It was on carpet.  When I went to remove it I discovered that it was double sided tape and the brown came of no problem, but left behind the sticky side.  I didn’t realize that I was actually creating more work for myself.

We can often unconsciously be creating more work for ourselves.

If we coach players by telling them what not to do (speaking in the negative), we are unconsciously reinforcing bad behavior.  If players keep hearing, “Don’t do this.  Stop doing that.”  We are actually creating more work for ourselves.  It is always harder to teach a person to unlearn wrong

Evaluating Your Volleyball Drills

by Hayley on September 25, 2011

In order to become a successful team, volleyball drills have to be run on a constant basis.  More than this however, the drills have to be good drills, done properly, or they will accomplish nothing that will help the game in the long run.  A good way to ensure that drills are being run properly is to introduce a volleyball drill evaluation to the team.  There are many strategies to this, but a really good one is a two-tiered system.  This would ideally be accomplished by the coach evaluating the drill, and each player evaluating his or herself.

A coach obviously has a better overall view of the team when they are running a volleyball drill.  This allows the coach to
