and Spiking

If you ask me: the ‘best’ part about playing volleyball is the thrill of a kill. After learning how to get up in the air and blast that ball down – there’ll be no hope for you: you’ll be “hooked” to the sport.

Sooo, here’s some words of wisdom on how you can get better at powering the ball over the net. a.k.a tha’ SPIKE!

It all begins with a Good Approach…

Once you spend time learning the correct approach, you can really experience how good it feels to attack the ball!

Volleyball Drills that are Position Specific

by Hayley on January 11, 2012

Volleyball drills consist mainly of various ways to hit a ball.  The classic formula of pass, set, spike is the main theme of these drills.  Volleyball has a lot more finesse than just knowing HOW to hit the ball correctly.  Knowing when to hit it, where to hit it, and where to be to hit it correctly are probably the most important fundamental skills that all players must possess.  Devising volleyball drills that will help instill these facts into your players’ mind becomes of utmost importance.

When looking at the design of realistic volleyball drills, it is essential to get your team to understand the difference between their rotational positions and their playing positions.  After each volley,

[Volleyball Magic]Up, Up and Away

by Hayley on December 30, 2011

One of the most important skills in performing an effective kill or block is the take off.

Having a good vertical from the take off doesn’t hurt and these drills will develop both.

For younger players the temptation is to take off on one foot, which leaves your players being off balance or landing into the net.

Here is an effective drill that helps your players develop the right take off either approaching the net for a spike or moving side to side for the block  and increases their vertical.

You will need several exercise mats (the accordion folding kind) or stable boxes of varying height for these drills.

Set up your mats or blocks so that they first have to jump 1 mat high, then two high and

[Volleyball Magic] Tic Tac Toe

by Hayley on October 19, 2011

One of my favorite games growing up was tic-tac-toe.  Actually it still is.

That’s why I turned it into a drill.  You will need volleyballs that are different enough so you can have x’s and o’s.

Tape a tic-tac-toe board on the gym floor.  Have one player stand in each space.  The other players are divided into two teams.  One team is x’s the other o’s.  Players will receive a toss and they must pass it to one of the players on the tic-tac-toe board.

Obviously you alternate between teams.

The players on the board must be seated and cannot move other than to catch the ball if it is coming to them.

The first team to get three in a row wins.  They get to choose one out

[Volleyball Magic] Bump. Set. Spike.

by Hayley on August 23, 2011

We drill into our players, “Bump.  Set.  Spike.”

That is the goal.  As you work with younger players they will just want to get the ball over.

But as they begin to grab the concept of bump, set and spike, they sometimes need to be able to adapt.

Let me paint you a picture.

Your team has just made a great to the setter. The setter, because she is just learning, gets a good set off but not high enough to be able to be spiked.

Here comes your enthusiastic player all ready to spike the ball but the ball is already below the top of the net.  They spike it wonderfully right into the net.

Or another picture of a setter who should just set or tip the ball over with that second hit but
